But the topic we are going to discuss here is <strong>curtains<\/strong>. Yes, you heard absolutely right. This is such a common thing that we often ignore, but we forget that this item doesn&#8217;t just stop sunlight from coming in; it can also <strong>elevate the whole look of your room<\/strong>. We just don&#8217;t know how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, we are going to talk about what things you should keep in mind if you are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curtaincasa.com\/uk\/\">buying curtains for your home<\/a><\/strong>, or planning to <strong>replace your old curtains or their rods<\/strong>. And trust me that by the end of this post, you will become a <strong>master of curtains<\/strong>. If you read this entire post, it will be absolutely clear to you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What kind of rod to buy?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How long should it be?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which material (metal or wood) and design to choose?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What design and colour curtains to get?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to install them afterwards?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much space should be at the top and bottom?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What should their length and width be?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basically, by the end, there will be nothing you don&#8217;t know about curtains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curtain Rod: Length, Placement, and Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Long Should Your Curtain Rod Be?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will give you a simple rule for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Measure the <strong>width of your window or door frame<\/strong> from edge to edge. Let&#8217;s assume it&#8217;s <strong>three feet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need to <strong>add six inches<\/strong> on the <strong>left side<\/strong> and <strong>six inches<\/strong> on the <strong>right side<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The total measurement you get is the length of the rod you should buy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example:<\/strong> If the frame is three feet wide, adding six inches on both sides totals 12 inches (or one foot). So, for a three-foot frame, you should get a <strong>four-foot rod<\/strong>. For a four-foot frame, you should get a <strong>five-foot rod<\/strong>. For this to happen, the curtain needs space. If you have the extra six inches of rod as I suggested, the entire curtain will gather over the rod once opened and <strong>will not obstruct the window or door<\/strong>. Since curtains are usually in two panels and open on both sides, I suggested leaving six inches on both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Special Case:<\/strong> In many cases, you might have a wall on one side and open space on the other. In such a situation, you won&#8217;t be able to leave six inches on the wall side. In this case, use the available space so that the entire curtain can gather when opened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Should You Install the Curtain Rod?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People often make the biggest mistake here: they install the rod <strong>just above where the window or door frame ends<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What you should do:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Look at the level of your <strong>ceiling<\/strong> (or false ceiling, or the lintel level if there is no false ceiling).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install the rod <strong>two inches below<\/strong> that level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is so that when the curtain hangs over it, the curtain will cover the rod, and you will only see about <strong>one inch of margin<\/strong> above the curtain.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It might seem that the window\/door is lower down, and you have to cover it, but that&#8217;s not the point. It is essential that the curtain hangs almost touching the ceiling. For that, your rod must be <strong>only two inches below the top level<\/strong>. This height makes the room look taller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choosing the Rod&#8217;s Design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding the rod&#8217;s <strong>material<\/strong>, you can choose metal or wood- whatever you prefer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main design element lies in the <strong>finials<\/strong> (the knobs on the side). Their design defines the entire rod&#8217;s look. You need to consider the style of your home:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Classic\/Luxury Look:<\/strong> If your home has a classic, royal, or luxurious look, you should choose finials that match this style. Go for finials that give a <strong>royal touch<\/strong> and complement your home&#8217;s interior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Modern\/Contemporary Look:<\/strong> On the other hand, if your home is more <strong>modern<\/strong> or <strong>contemporary<\/strong>, you should choose simpler finials. In this case, your curtain pattern should be <strong>light<\/strong> or <strong>plain<\/strong>. Do not go for a heavy pattern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Minimalist Room:<\/strong> Conversely, if your accent wall is plain, not many colours are used, and there are very few items in the room, you should go for a <strong>heavy element<\/strong> or a <strong>heavy pattern<\/strong> in the curtains (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/curtaincasa.com\/uk\/category\/blackout-curtains\/\">Blackout Curtains<\/a>). Your curtains will not just be curtains; they will become a <strong>highlighting element<\/strong> that will enhance the beauty of your room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pattern Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Light\/Plain:<\/strong> You can choose absolutely plain, very subtle patterns, or fabric patterns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Heavy\/Busy:<\/strong> You can choose a curtain with drawings, floral patterns, or other embellishments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have given you the guiding principle; you can decide your pattern based on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Curtain Colour<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, you must consider the <strong>size of your room<\/strong>: small or large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Small Room:<\/strong> If your room is <strong>less than 140 square feet<\/strong>, consider it small. In this condition, look at the colour used in your room. <strong>Stay in the same colour family<\/strong> and go for a <strong>darker shade<\/strong> of that colour. Do <strong>not<\/strong> create a contrast.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Example:<\/strong> If your room has a beige or cream colour, you can go for <strong>brown<\/strong>. If your room is white, <a href=\"https:\/\/curtaincasa.com\/uk\/product\/modern-sage-green-blackout-curtain-set-for-rooms\/\">sage green<\/a> or light green, you can go for <strong>grey<\/strong>. Stay in the same colour family and go darker, but avoid contrast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Large Room:<\/strong> If your room is <strong>more than 140 square feet<\/strong>, you can certainly look at <strong>contrasting colours<\/strong>. For example, the curtain behind me is a dark, contrasting colour to the rest of the room&#8217;s paint, as my room is quite large (about 170 square feet). This looks fantastic. But it is essential that your room is large for this to work well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curtain Length and Width<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you go to the shop, the first question will be: <strong>What length and width do you need?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Length:<\/strong> You must aim for <strong>full length<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your curtain should be <strong>one inch less than your ceiling height<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your curtain should be <strong>one inch above your floor<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The length in between is what you need for your curtains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example:<\/strong> If the ceiling height is about nine feet. The curtain should be 8.10 feet long. That is, one inch short at the top and one inch short at the bottom. You should calculate your length similarly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Crucially, always choose a full-length curtain<\/strong>, not one based on your window or door height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Taking full-length curtains adds a <strong>luxurious look<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It makes your room appear <strong>taller<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Remember:<\/strong> The more you divide your room into parts, the smaller it will look. A full-height curtain prevents this division, making your room feel larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Width:<\/strong> I will give you a simple formula:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Measure the width of your window or door frame (e.g., three feet).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiply this width by <strong>two<\/strong> or <strong>three<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example:<\/strong> If your door frame is three feet wide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>3*2 = 6 (Minimum width)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3*3 = 9 (Maximum width)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your curtain&#8217;s total width can be a minimum of <strong>six feet<\/strong> and a maximum of <strong>nine feet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, one curtain panel isn&#8217;t that wide; they come in variations of three, four, or five feet. Based on this calculation (6 to 9 feet total width), you need to figure out how many panels you require so that their combined width falls within this range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Logic: Importance of Pleats\/Folds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A significant factor in the beauty of curtains is the pleats or folds (the &#8216;waves&#8217;) they form. These pleats only appear if your curtain is at least double or triple the width of your window or door. This ensures that the pleats are maintained even when the curtain is fully closed (not folded back).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you buy a narrower width, the pleats are visible when the curtain is open. But when you close the curtain to cover the entire window\/door, the fabric is stretched. The beautiful, deep waves disappear, and you get shallow ripples that do not look good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Final Step: Installation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, by now, you know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What kind of rod to get, how long it should be, how to install it, and what design to choose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What colour and pattern your curtains should have, and how long and wide they need to be.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have bought everything and brought it home. Now comes the final step, which most people ignore. They put up the curtains straight away. <strong>Never make this mistake!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fold the curtains<\/strong> as per their natural pleats\/folds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give them a <strong>thorough press\/ironing<\/strong> to set the creases sharply.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Then<\/strong> hang them up.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This ensures that the pleats are uniform and equal right from the start. Otherwise, people wait for them to &#8220;settle&#8221; on their own, which can take several months due to the fabric type, and it looks a bit messy. It is essential to press the curtains first, following the pleats, before hanging them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See!
